Why does my face age?
While changes in facial features are all part of our natural ageing process, there are certain actions that can be taken to delay these changes from occurring or soften the visible effects.
Three distinct changes that occur as the body ages include a decline in bone density, a decrease in the volume of our fat pads, and a decline in tissue elasticity and support. This trifecta is what makes us appear noticeably older. As you can imagine, when facial bones decline and become less prominent, natural fat pads become smaller, and skin is more lax, then the entire facial shape can change dramatically. Features droop downwards as there is less support being provided from underneath, and wrinkles form as the skin becomes stretched and less plump.
The good news is that premium dermal fillers can be used to address all three of these concerns, significantly reducing the signs of ageing and achieving a more youthful appearance by restoring the natural features you were born with.
What is dermal filler?
Dermal filler is a hyaluronic acid-based gel solution. As hyaluronic acid is already naturally produced in our skin, HA fillers are well accepted by the body, incorporating into our tissue and lasting for many months. This makes it an ideal solution for restoring facial volume, shape and structure.
How does dermal filler work?
Dermal filler works by plumping from the inside out, filling the spaces below to create volume. Facial contours can be created and restored, hollowing is filled, and fine lines and wrinkles are immediately smoothed out. As they are made from hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers also act as a humectant, attracting water molecules to improve hydration of the tissue where the filler has been used. HA molecules can hold up to one thousand times their weight in water, and this hydration increases tissue quality and natural collagen production.
How long does dermal filler last?
There are several factors that can affect the longevity of dermal filler, including the volume used, the location, and the type and quality of the filler itself. There are many types of dermal filler, many created with different viscosities in order to best treat certain facial regions. For example, fillers used in the lips would often differ from those used in the cheeks, as facial contouring should be more prominent and robust than the soft and undetectable results often wanted for lips. Depending on the type of filler, it can last up to 2 years within the tissue before it naturally dissolves.
Does it matter where I go to get dermal filler?
Yes! Dermal filler is an S4 medication which is strictly regulated by the Australian government. This means it can only be prescribed by a medical doctor, and administered by AHPRA registered providers. There are also many different techniques when injecting dermal fillers, some much more advanced than others. Dermal fillers also come with associated risks, so it is crucial to seek treatment from cosmetic physicians with advanced knowledge in anatomy and technique in order to reduce these risks. And of course, each cosmetic injector shares a different artistic ‘eye’. For example, let’s say two artists have the same paint brush – one might complete an acceptable painting while the other creates a masterpiece. The same is true with your cosmetic injector.
